Port Introduction
Akureyri is a municipality in the northeast region of Iceland, with an area of 135 square kilometers and a population of 19219 people in 2021. It is the fourth largest municipality in Iceland and also the most populous town outside the densely populated southwest corner of Iceland. history The earliest recorded history of Akureri dates back to 1562, when a woman was sentenced for premarital sex. At that time, the Akureri architecture only had shops for Danish merchants and warehouses for storing goods. After 216 years, in 1778, the Danish king introduced a series of measures to improve the living conditions in Iceland, one of which was to designate Acre as a trading post, and the first residential building was also built accordingly. At that time, Akureyri had only 12 residents, and the measures taken by the Danish royal family to improve Akureyri's living conditions were not very successful. Akureyri lost its status as a trading post in 1826, and the town was unable to develop. Until 1862, the town regained its commercial status. economy The fishing industry has historically been the largest and most important industry in the local economy. Other industrial and commercial services have also been developed. Higher education is also a developing industry in the local economy. About 20% of the labor market is employed in the service industry. Two of Iceland's five major fishing companies have their headquarters in Akureri, partly due to the local ice free port. Other large companies include Samherji, Nor ð urmj ó lk, Brimhf, and Iceland's largest brewery Vifilfell. Akureri Hospital is a major employer in the region and one of the two main hospitals in Iceland.
