Port Introduction

Ports in northern Chile. When using the West 4.5 standard. The maximum draft is 9.14 meters, and the load density of water is 1025. The tidal range of the spring tide is 0.97 meters. The average tidal range is 0.79 meters, with prevailing southwest winds. Entering and exiting the port or mooring at the oil terminal station for mandatory navigation, the navigator picks up the ship 24 hours a day at a distance of 0.55 kilometers outside the breakwater terminal, where the water depth reaches 24.38 meters and there is a good anchor grip. Both mooring and starting must use tugboats. Communication method, port holiday working hours: 3 shifts per day, 08:00-15:30, 15:30-23:00, 23:00-06:30. The port service facilities include ship repair, refueling, small boats, medical services, towing, fresh water, supplies, and repatriation, but there are no dry docks or sewage discharge. Consuls from Bolivia, Colombia, Italy, Norway, Panama, Peru, Spain, Sweden, and Yugoslavia are stationed in the port area. Ikik is an artificial port with a 846 meter long breakwater connecting the island to the mainland. The breakwater has 3 berths and 4 berths. To the west of the breakwater are berths 4 and 5, with a depth of 270 meters and a front water depth of 9.75 meters. There are two small cargo warehouses built at the north end for storing bulk cargo. All berths are equipped with tugboats. There is no crane on the berth, and the cargo is unloaded onto the berth by the ship's suspension rod. The elevated conveyor belts on berths 6 and 7 are used for transporting nitrate, which can transport both bulk cargo and packaged goods. There are three tower compartments, but only two of them are working simultaneously. The third tower compartment has a longer conveyor belt for berth 6. The shipment volume of nitrate has significantly decreased, with less than 10000 tons per month. The fish oil loading equipment is located underground in berths 5 and 6, transporting 100 tons per hour. Ikik has been importing semi refined vegetable oil for use in whale processing plants. Berth 4 is equipped with one 100mm diameter oil pipe, which is unloaded by the ship's oil pump. There is a 900 ton storage tank on board every day. There is a private freezer in the port that can store 2500 tons of cryogenic fish. The loading rate of cold fish is 7-8 tons per hour per handling group, and the dedicated unloading area for explosive ships indicated on the chart is no longer in use because there are no barges there. These goods can only be unloaded at the berth with the consent of the port authorities in extremely urgent situations and must be transferred immediately. To the northeast of the port is the oil terminal station, which is equipped with two subsea oil pipelines leading to Shell's oil tanks (with a capacity of 36000 cubic meters). One oil pipe has a diameter of 254 millimeters and a length of 450 meters, while the other has a diameter of 203 millimeters and a length of 570 meters, used for unloading light oil and fuel oil. At the same time, only one oil tanker can be docked at the oil tanker berth, and the ships cannot be very close to each other. During the big fish news season, there are quite a few trawling boats entering and leaving the Iquique Port, and the traffic in the port waters is busy day and night. Fuel oil can be added to the port and is supplied in limited quantities by tanker trucks. There is a shortage of fresh water supply, and it is usually only available from April to December each year. The water pipes on the berth can provide 7 tons of fresh water per hour during the day and 10 tons at night. Other supplies are also limited, with some naval provisions. All water repairs can be carried out. Diesel motorboats below 500 horsepower can be repaired at tugboat yards.
