Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is the largest city in Southeast Asia and a world-renowned seaport. Jakarta is located on the north coast of western Java Island, at the mouth of the Chiron River, adjacent to Jakarta Bay, with a longitude of 106 ° 49 ′ E and a latitude of 6 ° 10 ′ S. It has a population of 8.5 million. The majority of residents are Javanese, with a few being Chinese, overseas Chinese, Dutch, and others. The vast majority of residents believe in Islam, Buddhism, and some believe in Christianity. The national language is Indonesian. Jakarta has a long history and became a port city of initial scale as early as the 14th century. At that time, it was called Sunda Galaba, meaning "coconut", and overseas Chinese called it the "Coconut City". In the 16th century, it was renamed Jakarta, meaning "Fortress of Victory and Glory". The port belonged to the Bachala dynasty in the 14th century. In 1522, the Kingdom of Wandan conquered the area and built a city. On June 22, 1527, it was renamed Jayajarda, meaning "Triumph City", and abbreviated as Jakarta. In 1596, the Netherlands invaded Indonesia and in 1621 changed Jakarta to the Dutch name "Batavia". On August 8, 1942, after the Japanese invaded Indonesia, Jakarta regained its name. On August 17, 1945, the Republic of Indonesia was officially established with Jakarta as its capital. On January 20, 1950, after the establishment of the federal government in Indonesia, Jakarta was renamed Batavia. On March 31, 1950, it was renamed Jakarta City, and in 1961, it was renamed Jakarta Special Zone until now. Jakarta's founding day is June 22nd, and a large-scale commemorative event is held every year on this day.
