Port Introduction
Gaolan Port is located in the western part of Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province. It is an important port area of Gaolan Port and the main port area of Zhuhai Port. The port area is located on the west bank of the the Pearl River Estuary, the east coast of Huangmao Sea and the sea area of Gaolan Islands. It faces the South China Sea to the south and is about 1 nautical mile away from the international route Daxi Waterway. It has good deep-water channel and seaward access conditions. Gaolan Port is also connected to the Xijiang River system, which can form a river sea intermodal transportation system that connects sea transportation and inland river transportation in Xijiang. Port positioning Gaolan Port is not a single cargo port, but a comprehensive port area mainly focused on bulk cargo, energy and chemical, container and general cargo transportation. In the historical plan, Gaolan Port focuses on the transportation of bulk goods such as oil and gas chemicals, ores, and coal, while also serving the industrial and regional logistics system in the western port area of Zhuhai. The port area has formed multiple specialized terminals, including different types of terminal facilities such as containers, petrochemicals, steel, electricity, coal, and LNG. Channel and Ship Conditions The deep-water conditions of Gaolan Port are an important feature that sets it apart from other port areas in Zhuhai. The main channel of the port area connects to the open sea and sets up boarding and disembarking points and quarantine anchorages for large ships. In recent years, there have been continuous large LNG ships entering and leaving the Gaolan Port LNG terminal. The maritime department has implemented temporary traffic control on the main channel and anchorage for LNG ships entering and leaving the port, reflecting that the port area has the operating conditions for large energy transport ships. Industry and Logistics Connection Gaolan Port has close ties with the western port industries of Zhuhai. Industrial clusters such as petrochemicals, energy, steel, and equipment manufacturing have formed around the port area, and port transportation is strongly related to the import and export of industrial raw materials, energy products, and industrial manufactured goods. The Nanjing Bay operation area focuses on the transportation of oil and gas products and petrochemical logistics, while the Nanshui operation area is equipped with dedicated and public docks for enterprises such as power plants and steel mills. Opening up to the outside world and port system Gaolan Port was approved for establishment in 1994 and officially opened to the public in 1996. After the completion of the integration and expansion of the Zhuhai Port Shore in 2024, Gaolan Port Area will become a new part of the Zhuhai Port Shore and further expand its scope of opening up to the outside world. At present, Gaolan Port plays an important role in connecting the Pearl River Sea Port with international shipping and Xijiang River inland transportation, and connects Zhuhai and the hinterland of the west bank of the the Pearl River through transportation systems such as Guangzhou Zhuhai Railway and Port Dredging Highway. From the perspective of port system, the core feature of Gaolan Port is not simply container transshipment, but relying on deepwater port, energy and chemical industry, bulk cargo and port industry to form a comprehensive transportation system, which is highly specialized and comprehensive in the port network on the west bank of the the Pearl River Estuary.
