After a seven-year hiatus, the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) in the Indian state of Goa is set to-enter the container shipping business, a move that is expected to revive the state's trade and logistics network. The port last handled container operations in 2018 and scheduled to resume operations in the last week of November 2025, marking a significant milestone in Goa's maritime economy.

As per port officials, the Corporation of India (SCI) has been identified as the feeder line operator for the new service. The container vessel SCI MUMBAI is scheduled to make its maiden at Mormugao Port on November 20, marking the official re-launch of container shipping at the state's premier seaport.

The development has sparked cautious optimism among exporters and trade associations, who have long been advocating for the restoration of container operations to reduce logistics costs and dependence on road transport to nearby ports.

" milestone will significantly enhance Goa's export-import potential, while also strengthening maritime connectivity in the region," said Vishnu Prasad, Senior Business Development Manager of Ports (Mormugao Port Terminals Private Ltd.), which operates the container terminal.

Industry observers believe that the restart of operations will provide a boost to coastal and international trade in Goa, positioning Mormugao Port once again as a competitive logistics hub capable of supporting the state's evolving industrial and export sectors
