On Saturday, a crew member fell from a cargo ship at the Port of Algeciras, necessitating a high-altitude rescue.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., the Algeciras Maritime Rescue Coordination Center received an emergency request for assistance from the ship "Leto": a crew member had suddenly fallen into the cargo hold, which was about 16 feet deep (approximately 4.88 meters).

Due to the difficulty of the helicopter medical evacuation operation caused by the cargo stacked above the hold, this option was ruled out. The Spanish maritime rescue team (Salv Maritimo) instead dispatched the search and rescue vessel Salvamar Denebola. The crew used a crane to lift the fallen person out of the hold and transfer them to ship, ensuring a safe return to shore.

Less than two hours after the accident, the fallen crew member was rescued and transferred to a local emergency center for further. The injured person was reportedly in serious condition but conscious when transported.

The cause of the accident is currently unknown.

LETO (IMO 311880, MMSI 636091088) is a container ship built in 2006 and currently sailing under flag of Liberia.

According to the Automatic Identification System (AIS), the vessel was heading towards the Port of Lomé in the Republic ofogo, scheduled to arrive on October 20th.
