Recently, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Port of Baltimore intercepted a stolen Cater D8T bulldozer worth approximately $237,000, preventing its illegal export to Ghana.
During a routine export inspection of the heavy equipment,BP officers discovered that its vehicle identification number (VIN) matched a reported theft in Carroll County, Maryland. The Carroll County Sheriff's Office subsequently confirmed that the report was still, and CBP seized the bulldozer.
Ghana has become one of the most common destinations for stolen vehicles. According to CBP data, of the250 stolen vehicles seized by the Baltimore Field Office last year, approximately 60% (or 151 vehicles) were destined for West African countries. Among these 28 shipments were destined for Ghana.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau reported a 17% decrease in the number of car thefts last year, attributed to preventative taken by car manufacturers, insurance companies, private owners, and rental companies.
However, CBP officers across the country still report an increase in the number of attempts to ship stolen from U.S. ports. In 2024, CBP officers at all U.S. ports recovered a total of 1,445 stolen vehicles an increase of approximately 10% from 2023 and a significant increase of 81% from 2021
