Greek shipowner Costamare is the latest liner-affiliated company to re-enter the newbuilding market, revealing an order for four 3,100 TEU vessels from an undisclosed Chinese shipyard.

In its Q2 earnings report, the company stated that the newbuildings are scheduled for delivery between the second and fourth quarters of 2027. Each vessel will enter into an eight-year time charter contract with what Costamare describes as a “top-tier liner company.”

The identities of both the shipyard and the charterer have not been disclosed. However, Costamare noted that the project will be funded through a combination of internal cash and debt financing.

While the company did not disclose the contract value, recent orders for 3,000–3,500 TEU vessels in China have been priced between USD 45 million and USD 55 million per unit, depending on specifications and slot reservations.

This order marks Costamare’s first return to the newbuilding market since 2018, under the leadership of Konstantinos Konstantakopoulos. The company currently operates a fleet of 68 container vessels with a total capacity of approximately 513,000 TEU (excluding newbuilds).

Earlier this year, Costamare spun off its dry bulk fleet to form Costamare Bulkers, which includes nearly 40 owned ships and around 50 chartered-in vessels operated through its CBI platform.

Costamare Inc., based in Athens, Greece, is one of the world’s leading owners and providers of containerships on charter. The company has a 37-year track record in the international shipping industry.
