Global logistics leader UPS has notified workers at its New Orleans facility that they will lose their jobs as the company scales back operations.

According to a company notice filed with the Louisiana Workforce Commission, UPS will temporarily shut down a package sorting center in New Orleans and lay off 177 employees.

This move is part of UPS's ongoing efforts to streamline its network and increase efficiency amid a decline in domestic package volumes. Reports indicate that all but 13 of the affected employees are part-time workers.

Local media in New Orleans reported on the closure last week. A UPS spokesperson told the media that the facility is expected to reopen sometime next year, and the company will attempt to relocate as many workers as possible to other sites.

In October last year, UPS closed a nearby customer service center.

UPS has previously announced plans to cut 20,000 jobs as it reduces its delivery volume for Amazon and consolidates its operations. In March, the company shut down a package center in Portland, Oregon, which will remain closed until September 2026 for upgrades to handle higher parcel volumes.

Last year, UPS also stated its intention to close 200 sorting centers over five years, redirecting packages from those facilities to more modern ones.
