Due to weather concerns and the inability to extinguish a persistent smoldering fire, Indian authorities have collaborated with a private salvage team to move the Wan Hai 503 container ship to a location farther from the coastline.

The Shipping Directorate reported: “The ship’s structure remains damaged but stable. The primary risks stem from the ongoing smoldering in hold No. 4, residual water in the engine room, and unpredictable weather patterns. Strong winds and heavy seas severely limit boarding operations, complicating firefighting and dewatering efforts.” Monitoring indicates the temperature in hold No. 4 continues to rise.

Of particular concern, the stern remains submerged, and the vessel is listing to the port side, though approximately 76% of its structural integrity is still maintained.
