The company will limit its operations to ocean freight between ports (CY/CY), suspending all Store Door and other multimodal services.

The decision, Maersk said, was made to prioritize the safety of its employees, vendors, and customers’ cargo in light of the worsening security situation in the country. The company will continue to monitor developments closely and maintain communication with local authorities and its on-ground teams to assess the potential for a safe resumption of services.

Haiti has seen a dramatic deterioration in public safety in recent years. Armed gangs have proliferated across the country, engaging in widespread smuggling, drug trafficking, extortion, and violent crime. These groups have severely undermined law and order, making economic activity and logistics operations increasingly dangerous.

According to United Nations reports, over 85% of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, is now effectively controlled by criminal gangs. This grim statistic underscores the extreme risks faced by residents, who live under constant threat of violence and instability. The breakdown of public security has disrupted daily life, eroded social structures, and left the country’s development efforts in a dire state.
