After a series of suspicious sabotage incidents in the Baltic Sea region, NATO officially launched a major maritime security operation codenamed "Baltic Sentry" to strengthen the protection of key underwater infrastructure.

The NATO Secretary General announced this operation at the Baltic NATO Allies Summit held in Helsinki, which was jointly attended by the Finnish President and the Estonian Prime Minister.

The background of this operation is the repeated destructive attacks on the Baltic Sea's underwater infrastructure in recent years:

On December 25, 2024, the Estlink 2 cable connecting Finland and Estonia, as well as four communication lines, were damaged. Finland subsequently detained the Russian tanker Eagle S, which was suspected of causing cable damage by dragging its anchor.

In November 2024, the Gotland cable between Lithuania and Sweden, as well as the underwater communication lines from Helsinki to Rostock, were damaged. The Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3 was listed as a suspect in the investigation.

In October 2023, the Balticconnector gas pipeline and cable between Finland and Estonia were damaged, with the Chinese ship NewNew Polar Bear being accused of causing the damage by dragging its anchor.

In September 2022, the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines exploded near Bornholm Island. Although the Swedish investigation confirmed that it was a deliberate sabotage, the perpetrator has not been identified to this day.

The "Baltic Sentry" operation is an important upgrade by NATO in terms of underwater infrastructure protection, including the following key deployments:

Multi-level force involvement: The operation will mobilize frigates, maritime patrol aircraft, and new naval drones, while integrating the maritime monitoring capabilities of all member states.

New command structure: Led by NATO's Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFCBS), with NATO's Maritime Command (MARCOM) undertaking the core tasks of maritime operations, and the newly established NATO Maritime Critical Undersea Infrastructure Security Center (NMCSCUI) providing support for decision-making and emergency response.

Enhanced deterrence: Through regular maritime patrols, joint exercises, and advanced monitoring technologies, the overall security level of the Baltic Sea region will be comprehensively improved.

The Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO said, "The 'Baltic Sentry' operation demonstrates NATO's rapid response capability in dealing with destructive acts, while also highlighting the unity among allies."
