When Air Freight Failed: How SARR Logistics Delivered Time Critical Hazardous Cargo to Morocco
AT A GLANCE
Cargo: Seven helium dewars, Class 2.2 dangerous goods
Mode: Road freight with EU T1 customs transit
Origin: Birmingham, United Kingdom
UK Exit Port: Dover
Destination: Casablanca, Morocco
Challenge: HAZ cargo incompatible with air freight; daily evaporation risk
Outcome: Delivered safely, T1 discharged 14 April 2026
The shipment was grounded before it had left the ground
When air freight was ruled out, seven hazardous helium dewars needed a complete rethink. SARR redesigned the route, handled export customs clearance in house, and issued and monitored T1 transit documentation to move the cargo from Birmingham to Casablanca.

THE CHALLENGE
Seven liquid helium dewars were booked on air freight from London Heathrow. Each weighed 1,776 kilograms combined and carried a Class 2.2 dangerous goods classification.
The wheeled bases made the units unstable for road transport to the airport. The vehicle could not proceed. Their height ruled out secondary screening, and the classification meant they could not be laid flat. Air freight was not viable. The shipment was grounded before it had left the ground.
A third pressure was immediate: liquid helium evaporates at one to two percent per day. Every hour spent rethinking the plan was cargo lost.
THE SARR APPROACH
SARR moved quickly. The dewars were transported to a specialist crating facility in Ashford and professionally packed into open timber crates, stable, road compliant, and built for an international journey through multiple customs jurisdictions.
SARR handled export customs clearance in house and issued a T1 transit document, permitting the consignment to transit EU customs territory from Dover, through France and Spain, to the Moroccan border without additional duties. The client's Spanish customs agent discharged the T1 at the border and released the cargo into Morocco.
THE RESULT
On 14 April 2026, SARR received confirmation that the T1 had been discharged. Seven hazardous helium dewars, initially grounded at Heathrow, had arrived safely in Casablanca, Morocco. The client expressed appreciation for SARR's rapid response and have since engaged SARR for the return of the empty dewars to the United Kingdom.
When air freight fails and the clock is running, SARR delivers.
