Port Introduction

VUNG TAU, also known as CAIMEP Port, is the largest deep-water port in Vietnam. It is located in the province of Ba Dinh Thuan, 80 kilometers south of Ho Chi Minh City, near the mouth of the Cai Mep Thi Vai River. Currently, all 2M trans Pacific routes dock here. The 5th Port Area, which belongs to the overall construction plan of the Vietnamese government's port system, is close to international shipping routes. The natural water depth of the port can accommodate heavy tonnage ships, and there is slight siltation every year, rarely requiring dredging. MSC officially added the SEAGULL Southeast Asia route at the end of March 2019, providing ample capacity for the increasingly busy international trade in Southeast Asia. MSC Touton Port SEAGULL route The SEAGULL route departs from Shanghai, passes through Ningbo, Xiamen, and Shekou ports, and directly reaches important ports in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam's Vung Tau Port, Thailand's Linchaban, Singapore, and Malaysia's Tanjung Pelepas Port. Among them, the SEAGULL route has a strong competitive advantage by directly docking at Vung Tau Port in Vietnam. As the only direct route in the market, we provide fast and convenient services for the growing Sino Vietnamese trade. At the same time, MSC also provides transportation services for exports to the traditional Vietnamese port of Ho Chi Minh City. Expansion: Analysis of the Current Situation of Vietnamese Ports Although Vietnam has a large number of ports, there are no more than 17 major ports, with the core ports located on both sides of the north and south. The overall scale of ports along the central coastline is relatively small. If Vietnam's ports are divided into three port clusters: northern, central, and southern, then based on the local economic development level, industrial distribution, and trade volume, the proportion of container throughput allocation is roughly 30:5:65. Specifically: 1) Northern Port Cluster (30%): The second largest port in the country is mainly located in Haiphong Port, surrounded by other small ports such as Hanoi, Leidong, Guangning, Jinpu, and Guangyi. Northern ports have traditionally been mainly used for bulk cargo, among which Haiphong Port has relatively small incoming and outgoing ships due to natural conditions. However, in recent years, the Vietnamese government has increased its investment in Haiphong Port and will also build a modern container deep-water port similar in scale to the southern port of Touton Gaimei in the future to accommodate the docking of ultra large container ships. 2) Central Port Cluster (5%): including Rong City, Bianshui, Hue, Da Nang, Gui Ren, and Nha Trang. Although this port cluster covers the main coastline of Vietnam, due to Nha Trang and Da Nang being major tourist cities in Vietnam, their proportion is relatively low in terms of positioning and cargo volume. 3) Southern Port Cluster (65%): including the largest ports in the country, Ho Chi Minh Port (total value of three main port areas), Vung Tau Port, and Gai Mei Port. This is the center of Vietnam's economic activities, accounting for nearly 65% of the country's container throughput. ALPHALINER officially announced that the throughput of Ho Chi Minh Port from January to September 2018 was 4.68 million TEUs, accounting for about 35% of the country's throughput. This means that the throughput of Vung Tau and Gai Mei ports accounts for nearly 30% of the country's throughput. However, like Shanghai to China, Hu Chi Minh Port will undertake more modern commercial activities in the future. With the development of real estate around the Saigon River in the city, it is expected that the overall throughput growth rate of Ho Chi Minh Port will be relatively flat in the near future; At the same time, the southern port of Gaimei has attracted a large number of international terminal operators due to its excellent port conditions. In the future, it will undertake the loading and unloading operations of major mainline ships (100000 ton class) and play an increasingly important role in ports in Vietnam and even Asia.
