Vladivostok, also known as Vladivostok, is located between Amur Bay and Ussuri Bay, adjacent to the Sea of Japan. It is the terminus of the Trans Siberian Railway and the Northern Route, and an important naval base for Russia. The industry is mainly focused on shipbuilding and is currently the largest economic center in the Far East region. In winter, the port freezes and requires icebreakers to assist in navigation. The existing 320 meter long container terminal line at Vladivostok Port, with a berth depth of 11 meters, will be extended to 400 meters by 2006, and the berth depth will reach 15 meters. Vladivostok Port has been handling international trade goods since 1991. There are currently 16 shipping routes, of which 10 are container shipping routes. The Vladivostok container terminal was put into use in 1983. The container terminal located at berth 16 has an annual processing capacity of 100000 TEUs. The container terminal is equipped with elevators capable of lifting up to 30.5 tons. Vladivostok Port plans to convert berths 14 and 15 into container terminals. After completion, the throughput capacity will be increased to 200000 TEUs per year. Vladivostok Port can accommodate liner ships with a total length of 260 meters and a draft of 11.7 meters.
