Rauma (Finnish: Rauma, Swedish: Raumo) is a city in the Satakunta district of the Republic of Finland, which obtained town status in 1442. Laoma is located on the west coast of Finland, adjacent to the Gulf of Bothnia, 50 kilometers north of Poli and 92 kilometers south of Turku. The total area of the jurisdiction is 1110.14 square kilometers, including a land area of 495.51 square kilometers and a water area of 614.63 square kilometers. On June 30, 2009, the total registered population was 39691, with a population density of 80.1 people per square kilometer. The proportion of Finnish speaking population and Swedish speaking population is 98.2% and 0.4% respectively. Laoma is renowned for its exquisite lace craftsmanship and ancient wooden architecture complex. Laoma Ancient City was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991. history Lauma obtained town status on April 17, 1442 and is the third oldest city in Finland. In 1550, King Gustav I of Sweden, who ruled Finland, issued a decree to recruit people from various parts of Finland to build the city of Helsinki. Many residents of Laoma had to leave their homes until 1557 when they were able to return to Laoma. The buildings in Laoma during the Middle Ages were mostly wooden structures, and two major fires in 1640 and 1682 almost destroyed the entire city. The currently preserved wooden architecture complex dates back to the 17th century and is distributed within a 28 hectare area of the ancient city, with a total of approximately 600 buildings. These New Renaissance style buildings are largely attributed to the flourishing maritime industry of that era. In 1897, Lauma owned 57 sailing ships, ranking first in Finland. The goods are mostly exported to Germany, Sweden, and Baltic countries. In the 1890s, Lauma established a teacher's college, which later merged into the University of Turku. At present, the Education Department of Turku University still has a branch in Lauma. Laoma merged the neighboring towns of Rauman maalaiskunta and Kodisjoki in 1993 and 2007 respectively, and then merged with Lappi in 2009. traffic Laoma is located on the European E8 highway between Turku and Poli. The Finnish National Highway 12 starts from Lauma Port. Laoma is connected to the main network of Finnish railways through a branch railway, passing through Kokemaki and Tampere. This branch line is now used for cargo transportation. Passenger transportation was terminated in 1988. The local bus is operated by Oras Liikenne company, with three routes and a hub located in Savira. Long distance buses directly reach major cities such as Helsinki, Tampere, and Turku. The nearest airport is Poli Airport. Laoma Port only handles freight transportation and not passenger transportation.
