Bangladesh’s premier seaport, Chattogram, despite achieving its highest-ever annual container throughput in 2024, slipped one position in the global rankings.
According to Lloyd’s List Top 100 Ports 2025, Chattogram handled 3,275,627 TEUs in 2024, a 7.4% increase from 3,050,793 TEUs in 2023. However, the port fell to 68th place, overtaken by Saudi Arabia’s Dammam Port, which recorded 3,290,538 TEUs to secure the 67th spot.
China’s Shanghai Port maintained its position as the world’s busiest port with 51.5 million TEUs, followed by Singapore in second place.
Commenting on Chattogram, Lloyd’s List noted: “The launch of Bangladesh’s first foreign-operated facility is expected to mark a turning point in easing congestion and modernising operations.” Saudi operator Red Sea Gateway Terminal began managing the newly built Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) in June 2024.
Chattogram managed to hold the 67th position in 2024 rankings despite a throughput decline in 2023. The port’s position has fluctuated in recent years—after seven years of steady growth from 2014 to 2020, it suffered a sharp drop in 2021 due to global challenges impacting garment exports.
Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) Secretary Md Omar Faruk stated that they had not yet received the detailed Lloyd’s List report.
However, port users pointed out that such rankings only reflect container throughput and do not fully capture efficiency or overall performance.
