Houthi Attack on Mokha Port Extends Red Sea Risks From Vessels to Port Infrastructure

Security risks in the Red Sea have expanded beyond attacks on vessels. On August 9, local time, Houthi forces launched drones and missiles at the Port of Mokha on Yemen’s Red Sea coast, causing casualties and serious damage to port facilities and nearby residential areas. The incident has raised concerns over the security of shore-based logistics infrastructure along the Red Sea.

Key Highlights

Port attack: The Port of Mokha was attacked on August 9, causing casualties and serious damage to port facilities.

Risk expansion: The conflict has extended from attacks on vessels at sea to ports, residential areas, and other shore-based locations.

Escalating situation: Several vessel attacks were reported in the Red Sea in early August, while tensions on land have also intensified.

Strategic location: Mokha is close to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a major shipping route between Asia and Europe.

Market uncertainty: Vessel traffic has not yet declined significantly, while uncertainty remains over whether large-scale rerouting will resume.

Mokha Port Hit by Large-Scale Drone Attack

The attack, involving multiple drones, represents a further escalation of the conflict in the Red Sea region. According to Reuters and statements from the Yemeni military, seven people were killed and 30 were injured, while Yemeni air defenses intercepted 11 incoming drones.

The attack targeted the commercial terminal and key storage areas at the Port of Mokha. Port logistics infrastructure sustained serious damage, while nearby residential areas were also affected, extending the impact beyond maritime targets.

Red Sea Risks Extend From Vessel Attacks to Port Infrastructure

The latest incident differs from previous security events in the Red Sea. Earlier Houthi attacks had largely focused on merchant vessels transiting the region, with carriers able to reduce exposure through temporary rerouting or service adjustments.

The attack on fixed port infrastructure creates additional risks for shore-based logistics operations. If ports continue to be targeted, vessel calls, cargo storage, and terminal operations could face disruption. Together with several tanker attacks reported in early August and rising tensions on land in Yemen, the latest incident is increasing pressure on both maritime and shore-based logistics operations in the region.

Bab el-Mandeb Supply Chain Risks Remain Under Watch

The Port of Mokha is located near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key shipping route linking Asia and Europe. The attack therefore raises broader concerns over the stability of shipping and logistics operations along the route.

For now, vessel traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has not shown a significant decline, and no large-scale withdrawal from the route has been reported. However, uncertainty remains over whether further attacks on port infrastructure could lead to renewed rerouting, higher freight rates, increased war-risk surcharges, and additional pressure on Middle East supply chains.
