ZIM Adjusts Mediterranean Route: New Direct Call at Tianjin, Busan Cargo Shifted to Ningbo Transshipment

ZIM Integrated Shipping Services has implemented strategic adjustments to its core Mediterranean-Far East ZMP shipping route. The key revisions include adding Tianjin Port as a new direct port of call, while removing South Korea’s Busan Port from the main route and switching Busan cargo to transshipment via Ningbo Port.

According to reports from DynaLiners, Busan will no longer serve as a direct call port on the ZMP route after the adjustment, with all relevant cargo connections realized through Ningbo transshipment. Tianjin Port has become the northernmost call port on the route.

Updated Port Call Sequence

Tianjin — Qingdao — Shanghai — Ningbo — Shenzhen (Dachan Bay) — Ho Chi Minh (Cai Mep) — Valencia — Barcelona — Genoa — Ashdod — Haifa — Shenzhen (Dachan Bay) — Tianjin

1. Strategic Implications Behind ZIM’s Route Adjustment

The seemingly simple "one addition and one adjustment" move reflects ZIM’s in-depth market considerations and operational optimization strategies.

Strengthen North China Market and Capture Regional Export Dividends

As the key maritime gateway for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Tianjin Port boasts a vibrant hinterland economy with robust manufacturing and foreign trade export demands. Previously, ZIM lacked direct Mediterranean shipping services in North China, resulting in the loss of local cargo sources.

The newly launched direct Tianjin call marks a key step for ZIM to deepen its presence in China’s market, especially the North China region. It is expected to cut the transit time for North China export cargo by 3 to 5 days, effectively reducing cargo damage and delay risks caused by transshipment. This initiative will help ZIM attract more local shippers and improve its market competitiveness and market share in North China.

Optimize Route Network to Balance Operational Efficiency and Costs

Though Busan Port is a traditional hub in Northeast Asia, it has been plagued by port congestion and rising operational costs in recent years. Removing Busan from the main route and adopting Ningbo transshipment is a prudent move for ZIM to optimize costs and improve operational efficiency.

As the world’s top port by cargo throughput, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port features an extensive route network and high transshipment efficiency, enabling seamless connection with the ZMP main line and ensuring smooth shipment of Busan-originated cargo.

Fewer main-line port calls allow vessels to complete cargo collection in the Far East segment more efficiently and sail toward the Mediterranean earlier, thereby improving the overall voyage turnover efficiency and profitability.

2. Impacts on Freight Forwarders

Direct Tianjin Calls Enable North China’s Direct Mediterranean Exports

For the first time, Tianjin Port is included in ZIM’s Mediterranean route network, serving as the northernmost direct call port of the route in the Far East. This enables export cargo from North China to enjoy door-to-port direct shipping services without transshipment via Qingdao or Shanghai, covering core Eastern Mediterranean ports including Valencia, Barcelona, Genoa, Ashdod and Haifa.

Busan Downgraded to Ningbo Transshipment Service

Busan Port is no longer a main-line call port of the ZMP route. For cargo departing from Busan, ZIM will gather shipments via its robust feeder network to Ningbo Port for connection with ZMP main-line vessels. The shipping service remains available, but the transportation route and transit time will be adjusted accordingly.

Streamlined Route Brings Higher Operational Efficiency

The removal of one main-line port call shortens the overall voyage of the ZMP route, reducing vessel port stay time in theory and improving schedule reliability. It serves as a significant benefit for time-sensitive cargo shipments.

Maiden Voyage Approaching, Monitor On-site Operation Performance

Per ZIM’s official announcement, the updated route will be inaugurated by the vessel ZIM SAN DIEGO, which arrived in Tianjin on June 29, 2026. Freight forwarders with upcoming shipping plans are advised to closely monitor the actual schedule and operational performance of the maiden voyage.
