Global Carriers Announce Rate Hikes and Surcharges – Up to USD 1,600/Container


Recently, major shipping lines Maersk, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd have successively issued notices of rate increases and new surcharges, with adjustments reaching up to USD 1,600 per container.


1) Maersk: French Polynesia PSS

Maersk will impose a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) on all cargo bound for French Polynesia starting September 5 and September 23.


From Sept 23: Shipments from the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, Colombia, and Taiwan will be charged USD 800/1,600.


From Sept 5: Shipments from all other origins will be charged USD 800/1,600.


2) Maersk: Middle East PSS

Effective Sept 10, Maersk will implement a new PSS of USD 700 per container for shipments from Asia-Pacific (including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Southeast Asia, Korea, etc.) to the Middle East (UAE, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia).


3) CMA CGM: East Africa Increase

From Sept 1, rates from the Far East (including NEA, SEA, China, HK & Macau) to East Africa will increase:


Kenya: +USD 150/TEU


Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) & Mozambique: +USD 200/TEU


4) CMA CGM: West, Central & Southern Africa Increase

From Sept 1, rates from the Far East to West Africa, Central Africa (Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Benin, Ghana, Togo, Equatorial Guinea), and Southern Africa (Angola, Congo, DRC, Namibia, Gabon, Cameroon) will increase by USD 250/TEU.


5) Hapag-Lloyd: South America East Coast PSS

From Sept 1, Hapag-Lloyd will apply a General Rate Increase (GRI) of USD 500 per container on cargo from the Far East (China, SEA, Korea, Japan, etc.) to South America East Coast (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay).


6) Hapag-Lloyd: West Africa PSS

From Aug 31, Hapag-Lloyd will impose a PSS of USD 400/TEU on shipments from Asia and Oceania to West Africa, covering ports in Angola, Congo, DRC, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, and Namibia.
