On Saturday, a fire broke out on an oil tanker and a cargo ship off the coastal city of Yeosu in southern South Korea, resulting in one death and two injuries.

The Yeosu Coast Guard, located 320 kilometers south of Seoul, reported that the 2,692-ton oil tanker and the 24-ton cargo ship were moored next to each other when the fire started.

Witnesses on nearby vessels alerted the coast guard to the incident.

According to authorities, all 18 crew members were rescued—14 from the oil tanker and four from the cargo ship. However, the captain of the smaller cargo ship was found unconscious and later pronounced dead. Two crew members from the older oil tanker sustained burn injuries.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but an investigation into the incident has been launched.

The fire was brought under control and extinguished by around 7:45 a.m.

The coast guard stated that the oil tanker was carrying 2,500 tons of toxic chemicals, though it is still uncertain whether any of them leaked into the ocean.
