Canada is facing one of its most severe wildfire seasons on record, with burned areas already exceeding 73,000 square kilometers nationwide—more than double the 10-year average for this period, according to official data.

British Columbia Under Threat

New fires erupted on July 13 near Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, consuming over 20 square kilometers of forest. Local authorities have:

  • Declared a state of emergency in Port Alberni
  • Ordered evacuations for southern Vancouver Island communities
  • Issued special air quality statements warning of hazardous smoke conditions

Historic Wildfire Season

While Canada's typical wildfire season runs May through September, 2025 has already become:

  • The second-worst wildfire year in recorded history
  • Particularly severe in western provinces

Environment Canada warns residents to limit outdoor activities as heavy smoke is expected to persist over Vancouver Island's interior regions for the next 24-48 hours. The combination of dry conditions and elevated temperatures continues to challenge firefighting efforts across the country.

The situation remains fluid as multiple fires continue burning across western Canada, with resource mobilization ongoing to protect affected communities.
