New Zealand's Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) is investigating a serious maritime incident involving an engine room explosion aboard the Olivia, a Malta-flagged bulk carrier docked at Bluff’s South Port.

The explosion occurred on May 24 while the vessel was berthed at Berth 11, loading a shipment of logs. According to TAIC, three crew members were injured while conducting boiler repairs in the engine room at the time of the incident.

Emergency services, including St John Ambulance, responded promptly. Medical teams treated the injured crew: one sustained moderate injuries, while two others suffered serious trauma. All were transported for further care.

Classified as a “serious maritime incident” under the IMO's Casualty Investigation Code, the case is being thoroughly examined by TAIC. Details surrounding the exact cause remain undisclosed pending investigation outcomes.

The Olivia, built in 2013, arrived in Bluff on April 22 after departing from Bintulu, Malaysia, on March 25. The vessel was scheduled to depart on May 29.

Bluff’s South Port, New Zealand’s southernmost commercial harbor, is a critical bulk export hub, handling over 3.2 million tonnes of cargo annually and hosting more than 130 large vessels in the latest half-year period.
