As one of the world’s largest container vessels and the largest in the MSC fleet, the Ultra Large Container Vessel (ULCV) MSC MARIELLA made its inaugural call at the Colombo Port’s Colombo East Container Terminal (CECT), marking a historic milestone for Sri Lanka’s maritime industry.

This landmark call highlights the growing prominence of the Port of Colombo as a major transshipment hub in the region and its capability to handle the world’s largest and most advanced container ships.

Built in 2023, the MSC MARIELLA measures 399.90 meters in length and 61.30 meters in width, with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 240,739.0, a maximum draft of 16.26 meters, and a container capacity of 24,346 TEUs.

The vessel’s arrival at the Port of Colombo underscores the terminal’s ability to efficiently and safely accommodate ultra-large container vessels.

Operated by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), the Colombo East Container Terminal (CECT) is equipped with state-of-the-art ship-to-shore (STS) gantry cranes capable of handling vessels of this size, reaffirming SLPA’s commitment to technological advancement and the development of port infrastructure.

This significant port call not only enhances Colombo’s standing in the global shipping network but also opens new opportunities for trade and connectivity across the South Asian region.
