According to Russian Railways on March 15, a freight train derailed in the Amur region of Russia’s Far East and collided with another freight train. The incident resulted in one person being injured.

Russian Railways stated on social media that the accident occurred at around 6:00 AM Moscow time on March 15. The freight train, consisting of 28 carriages and 2 locomotives, derailed and collided with another freight train traveling in the opposite direction. The driver of the train involved in the collision was injured. The accident caused damage to the transportation infrastructure in the area, leading to a suspension of rail traffic and delays to passenger trains passing through the affected route.

Russian Railways has established an accident management headquarters, and the cause of the incident is under investigation.

The Amur region holds a significant position in transportation within Russia’s Far East, particularly in railway and road transport. The region is served by two major rail lines: the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM), which connect the city of Khabarovsk and the seaports of the Primorsky Krai, covering a total length of 2,984 kilometers. These railways account for 35.2% of the total rail length in the Far Eastern Economic Zone. In freight transport, railways dominate, accounting for 57.2%, while in passenger transport, railways account for 5.7%.

Local media reports indicate that legal action has been initiated on the grounds of “violating railway transportation safety rules and operations.” The total damages and specific details are yet to be determined.
