South Korea’s HMM has selected its local yards for its latest batch of newbuilds, inking a contract worth $14.6billion with the country’s leading shipbuilding group HD Hyundai for the construction of eight 13,400 teu liquefied natural gas (LNG dual-fuel container ships, with two to be built by HHI and six by HD Hyundai Samho, scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2029

Last month, HMM joined the elite club of container carriers with more than a million teu of capacity, becoming the eighth member. [HMM of South Korea joins “Million-T TEU Club”, competing with shipping giants such as MSC!] According to Alphaliner’s analysis, HMM’s current fleet capacity 1,016,180 teu, and the South Korean shipping company has doubled its operating capacity over the past five years.

In September last year HMM unveiled its expansion plan until the end of the century, setting aside up to KRW23.5 trillion (approximately $17.48bn), to nearly double the size of its container ship fleet by 2030, while the size of its tanker and dry bulk fleets will be expanded to three times the size.

With this contract, HD Hyundai has landed its largest-ever order volume for container ships since 2007.

A representative of HD Hy said: “In the future, we will continue to lead the decarbonisation of the shipbuilding and shipping industries by focusing on the technological competitiveness of eco-friendly, energyefficient vessels.”
