Recently, persistent congestion at Italy’s Genoa port has caused vessel schedule changes and trucking delays, resulting in delayed deliveries for both importers and exporters.
Genoa, located in the Liguria region in northwest Italy, is one of the country’s major Mediterranean ports.
Hapag-Lloyd reported significant operational challenges and severe congestion at the VTE terminal in Genoa.
As a result, several emergency measures and schedule adjustments are necessary, affecting multiple vessels between August 19 and September 23.
Kuehne+Nagel highlighted several factors contributing to the disruption in Italy, including railway interruptions, driver shortages during peak traffic at the end of July and early August, and further shortages caused by holidays in late August.
Some warehouses also indicated that they will not receive containers for two to three weeks this month due to overbooked berths at Genoa, exacerbating the situation.
The congestion particularly impacts Zim Integrated Shipping Services, causing missed calls at Genoa and La Spezia, with vessels rerouted to Vado port.
Additionally, Kuehne+Nagel noted that driver transfers between the two ports and the strict booking process at APM Vado pose challenges, limiting the number of import and export operations.
Overall, congestion at terminals and gates is affecting port-to-port transportation, leading to severe truck delays.
