The car carrier "Morning Midas", which caught fire on June 3rd, sank while being towed in the Pacific Ocean on the afternoon of June 23rd (British time).

Shipowner Zodiac Maritime Agencies said on June 24 that rescue workers from Resolve Marine reported that the Morning Midas, built in 2006, sank in the northern waters at 4:35 p.m. British time.

Zodiac, a company headquartered in the UK, said: "The damage caused by the fire, combined with bad weather and subsequent water ingress, led the Morning Midas to sink in waters about 5,000 meters deep and 360 nautical miles from the land."

When the fire broke out, the "Morning Midas" ship, leased to SAIC angji Shipping, a shipping company under Chinese automaker SAIC Motor, set off from Yantai, China, carrying 3,000 vehicles, including 800 electric vehicles. A fire broke out on the way to the port of Lazaro Cardenas in Mexico. All 22 crew members on the ship evacuated by lifeboats and were taken away by the COSCO Hailas container ship.

It is reported that the fire originated on a deck where electric vehicles are stored, reigniting concerns about the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries in maritime transportation.
