Due to the deteriorating security situation in Tripoli, Libya, all port operations have been suspended until further notice.

Last week, violent clashes erupted across multiple districts in the Libyan capital following the reported assassination of a powerful militia commander. The conflict quickly spread, with rival factions engaging in heavy combat—even in densely populated urban areas—using heavy weaponry.

In response, Hapag-Lloyd, the German shipping giant, announced an immediate suspension of all vessel calls to and from Tripoli port, and will no longer accept any new bookings related to the port until further notice.

The situation has drawn international concern. UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged all parties to take urgent steps to uphold the ceasefire. His spokesperson stated on May 15:

"The escalation is deeply alarming. External armed groups have launched heavy shelling in civilian-populated areas. The Secretary-General reminds all parties of their obligation to protect civilians and calls for sincere dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict."

Tripoli, located in northwestern Libya along the southern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, is not only the capital city but also the country’s largest and most strategic port. Historically a major hub for trade, it remains the center of Libya’s political and economic activity.
