Since early April, layoffs across manufacturing, distribution, and freight sectors in the southeastern United States have surged, with over 1,800 job cuts reported in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
Saddle Creek Logistics
Saddle Creek announced it will lay off 73 employees at an Atlanta-based facility after losing a service contract with Del Monte Foods. “Del Monte chose not to renew our contract. All affected associates received the required WARN notice on April 2, and separations will begin on June 1,” the Florida-based 3PL company said in a state filing. Saddle Creek provides warehousing, packaging, and transportation solutions for manufacturers, retailers, and e-commerce businesses.
Hood Container Corp.
Hood Container Corp. plans to close its plant in Simpsonville, South Carolina, resulting in 60 layoffs. According to a WARN notice, the closure will be completed by June 15. The company did not provide a reason for the shutdown. Hood Container operates 56 facilities across the U.S. and employs over 1,000 workers.
Quickway Transportation Inc.
Trucking company Quickway Transportation Inc. will cease operations, leading to 45 job cuts at its Murfreesboro, Tennessee facility. The closure is scheduled for completion by June 15. No specific reason was given in the state filing.
C&S Wholesale Services LLC
C&S Wholesale Services LLC will shut down its distribution center in Baldwin, Florida, resulting in 490 layoffs. The closure is scheduled for July 4. The company, which operates under the name C&S Wholesale Grocers, is one of the largest grocery wholesalers in the U.S. No reason for the layoffs was disclosed.
Adient Plc
Adient Plc will close two plants in Tennessee, cutting 415 jobs. The Lexington facility will lay off 320 employees, while the Columbia facility will release 95 workers. Both plants are scheduled to shut down by June 27. The company, which supplies seating components for major automakers like GM, Ford, and Honda, cited reasons for closure in its WARN notices.
Saks Global Tennessee Fulfilment Center
Saks Global will shut down its distribution center in La Vergne, Tennessee, eliminating 446 jobs. La Vergne is located about 19 miles southeast of Nashville. The center is part of Saks Global, a New York-based department store holding company that includes Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue. No reason was given in the WARN notice, though WWD reported Saks recently announced nationwide layoffs of about 550 employees as part of a business consolidation.
Grede LLC
Grede LLC will close its ductile iron foundry in Brewton, Alabama, resulting in 220 job losses, according to WARN notices and media reports. The plant, operating since 1976, produces castings for the U.S. auto market. The company cited weak post-COVID sales and underutilized capacity at some facilities as reasons for the closure, set for May 22. Grede, based in Southfield, Michigan, operates 10 plants in the U.S. with around 3,000 employees.
Bunzl Distribution USA
Bunzl Distribution USA Inc. will close multiple divisions in Memphis, Tennessee, cutting 106 jobs. The Memphis warehouse operations will be permanently shut down by June 30. Affected companies include Cordova Safety Products, SAS Safety Corp., M. L. Kishigo Manufacturing Co. LLC, and Majestic Glove. State filings indicate affected employees may have the option to transfer to another facility 20 miles away. Bunzl, based in St. Louis, supplies products to food processors, supermarkets, retailers, convenience stores, and others, operating 190 warehouses across North America and the Caribbean with over 8,000 employees.
