On April 26 local time, an explosion occurred at the port of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran.
According to multiple Iranian media reports, Iran's rescue, security, and rapid response teams have arrived at the scene and are carrying out operations, but the port remains in a "chaotic state." The explosion's shockwave was extremely powerful, severely damaging most of the buildings within the port and causing serious damage to many vehicles.
At around 9 p.m. local time on April 26, the fire at Bandar Abbas spread to other containers, causing further explosions, although the subsequent blasts were "less intense than the initial explosion."
As of 11 p.m. local time on April 26, the fire resulting from the explosion at Bandar Abbas Port had not yet been extinguished.
Currently, Bandar Abbas has entered a state of emergency. Following the explosion, air pollution has significantly worsened. In a letter to local health authorities, Iran’s Ministry of Health mentioned that the explosion may have released pollutants such as ammonia, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide, stressing that the city must declare a state of emergency and establish a specialized task force.
The explosion occurred at the Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas on April 26. This port is one of Iran's major shipping hubs and one of its most important ports. According to data from Iran’s official IRNA news agency, this port accounts for more than 55% of Iran’s non-oil imports and exports. Additionally, it handles over 85% of Iran’s container operations.
Multiple Iranian media outlets reported that the explosion has injured more than 700 people so far.
