It is reported that RCL and TS Lines have jointly launched a new Far East-Red Sea service, providing shippers with a new direct connection between China’s main export hubs and key gateways of the Red Sea. Evergreen will charter space on the route under the brand OGRD.
The new service will initially operate with a bi-weekly rotation, deploying vessels of 3,000 TEU, calling at Shanghai, Qingdao, Nansha-Guangzhou, Shekou-Shenzhen, Jeddah, Suqain, Aqaba, Jeddah and then back to Shanghai.
The service is designed to meet the growing demand for the transportation of goods to the Red Sea region, in particular consumer goods, machinery and building materials destined for Saudi Arabia and Egypt. In addition, the service provides transshipment opportunities via Jeddah, one of the fastest-growing hubs in the Red Sea region.
The launch of the new service reflects the increasing interest of regional carriers in expanding China-Red Sea capacity. Over the past year, demand in this market has grown faster than the supply capacity of existing services.
