Since launching an unprecedented buying spree of second-hand container ships in August 2020, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) amassed a massive fleet of 461 used vessels, an eye-popping figure that has left the industry reeling. The figure, disclosed by shipping analyst Alphal, is described as "staggering".

Among them the 3,651 TEU "Atlantica Pioneer" was sold by Atlantica Shipping of Oslo, with the transaction price reportedly exceeding $45. Following this asset disposal, the Norwegian shipowner no longer has any container ships under its name.
Meanwhile, MSC acquired the 3,79 TEU "Irenes Resolve" from Greek Tsakos Shipping & Trading for $23 million, and the 3,534 TEU "Rio", controlled by Marlow Group, for $32 million.
In addition to the massive buying of second-hand ships, MSC has continued to push full capacity utilization of Asian shipyards in the 2020s.
According to Alphaliner data, the company currently has 123 vessels order, with a total capacity exceeding 2.1 million TEU, setting an industry record.
