CPKC Rail Disruptions in U.S. Gulf States Cause Delays and Supply Chain Strain Across North America

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) is experiencing operational disruptions in its rail services across U.S. Gulf States, causing delays and congestion in both full truckload and intermodal freight, impacting the entire North American supply chain.

Bottlenecks in Louisiana and Mississippi have disrupted intermodal freight flows between Mexico and the U.S. Southeast.

These rail service delays have increased container dwell times at terminals, with some shippers reporting difficulties securing intermodal equipment and rail space in a timely manner.

CPKC has acknowledged the disruptions and is implementing an action plan to address the service delays.

While the primary impact is on rail and intermodal transport, the ripple effects are spreading through the broader logistics network, especially at ports and terminals that rely on timely rail connections for container movement.

These challenges risk exacerbating an already fragile global supply chain, which is currently grappling with its worst congestion levels since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recent data from Tradlinx shows that 96% of major container ports worldwide are experiencing operational disruptions, with some regions seeing average vessel wait times exceeding 10 days. Increasing cargo backlogs at ports such as Singapore, Cape Town, and Rotterdam are putting additional pressure on the global maritime system.
