On the afternoon of April 18, Wan Hai Lines, the world's 11th largest container shipping company, suffered a cyberattack on its official website. The company confirmed the incident in a filing submitted to the stock exchange, stating that the attack had no significant impact on its operations. It also noted that no internal or employee data was leaked. Following the attack, the website was taken offline.

“Our company promptly activated a comprehensive cybersecurity response plan and engaged external cybersecurity firms and experts to handle the incident. The affected website was immediately isolated to ensure information security, and the matter has been reported to relevant authorities,” Wan Hai said in a press release.

In recent years, most major shipping companies—including MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, and COSCO—have experienced cyberattacks.

Wan Hai’s website has since returned to normal. The company stated it will continue strengthening security checks on its networks and IT infrastructure.

According to a cybersecurity report published in March by Thetius, CyberOwl, and HFW, one in five shipping companies faced cyberattacks in 2024. However, the report found that ransom payments were halved compared to 2023, averaging around $100,000.
