Maersk Ship "Boycotted"? Dockworkers Claim It Is "Transporting Supplies to Israel"

Recently, a union representing Moroccan dockworkers became the latest organization to call for a boycott of Maersk ships linked to transporting supplies to Israel. The group issued a statement targeting a batch of containers from the U.S. scheduled for transshipment this weekend at Morocco’s Tanger Med port.

Maersk has repeatedly denied allegations of transporting weapons to Israel during the Gaza conflict. The issue has plagued the company, even becoming a topic at its annual shareholder meeting earlier this year. Shareholders voted down a resolution by activist investors seeking to ban the company from shipping weapons to Israel.

A Maersk spokesperson told Moroccan media that the current allegations, originating from activist groups, are “false and misleading.” The company stated that accusations of transporting weapons—or, in this case, spare parts to the Israeli military—are “baseless accusations based on assumptions by activist groups.”

It is reported that containers loaded with components for U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets were loaded onto the *Maersk Detroit* (84,626 deadweight tons and 6,200 TEU capacity), which is en route to Moroccan ports.

The U.S.-flagged *Maersk Detroit* is operated by Maersk Line, Limited, a company participating in the U.S. Maritime Security Program (MSP) and carrying cargo including military aid, reportedly as a “key element of U.S. foreign policy.” Due to its support for the U.S. government, this route has previously been targeted by activists in boycott campaigns.

According to reports circulating in recent days, the containers will be unloaded and transferred to the *Nexoe Maersk* (31,500 deadweight tons and 2,250 TEU capacity) for onward shipment to Israel.

The Hong Kong-flagged *Nexoe Maersk* is a feeder vessel in the company’s fleet. Its route includes port calls in the Mediterranean.

The Moroccan Port Workers’ Union, affiliated with the Moroccan labor union, issued a statement urging workers, employees, and executives of companies operating at the port to boycott the *Nexoe Maersk*. It cited activist reports claiming the ship will deliver F-35 components and other military equipment to Israel.

While denying the allegations, a Maersk spokesperson noted that when they transport F-35 components, they are delivered to suppliers, not the military, and only to countries participating in the F-35 program.

Maersk has repeatedly stated it has strict policies prohibiting the shipment of weapons or ammunition to conflict zones. The spokesperson said rigorous controls are in place.

Activists have repeatedly targeted ships operated by Maersk Line, Limited due to their transportation of U.S. cargo. In November last year, in Spain, a group focused on two vessels, with reports suggesting the ships would reroute to Morocco due to protests. Maersk’s terminal at Tanger Med is the transshipment location mentioned in the current reports.
