CMA CGM Iron is a dual-fuel containership built by South Korea's Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. It is capable of using both conventional fuels and alternative fuels such as bio-methanol and e-methanol.
The CMA CGM Iron has a container capacity of 13,000 TEUs and is the first of 12 new dual-fuel methanol ships in CMA CGM's fleet. Additional sister ships are scheduled to be launched this year and in 2026, including CMACGMCOBALT, ARGON, PLATINUM, MERCURY, HELIUM, KRYPTON, THORIUM, OSMIUM, SILVER, COPPER, and GOLD.
Recently, the CMA CGM Iron docked in Abu Dhabi, becoming the first dual-fuel methanol containership to sail to Abu Dhabi. This is part of the CMA CGM's CIMEX1 service, which connects Asia and the Middle East Gulf region.
CMA Terminals Khalifa Port is a joint venture between CMA Terminals (which holds a 70% stake) and AD Ports Group (which holds a 30% stake). The terminal has two berths, with a total length of 800 meters and a depth of 18.5 meters, allowing it to accommodate and handle some of the largest containerships in the world.
Christine Cabau Woehrel, Executive Vice President of Assets and Operations at CMA CGM Group, added, "The arrival of the first dual-fuel methanol ship at Khalifa Port marks an important milestone in our journey to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. It highlights the shared goal of CMA CGM Group and AD Ports Group to position CMA CGM’s Khalifa Port terminal as a sustainable, cutting-edge infrastructure, providing the best service while strengthening its role as a key hub connecting Asia, Africa, Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Gulf, and the Indian subcontinent."
