On the morning of March 10, Pacific International Lines (PIL) held a grand naming ceremony for its fourth 14,000 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) dual-fuel container ship at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai. The new ship was officially named "Kota Embun," with Mrs. Evelyn Ng, wife of PIL Deputy Chairman Mr. Ng Kee Choe, serving as the godmother. She personally bestowed the name and presided over the ceremony.
"Kota Embun" is the first ship in the PIL fleet to feature a new windshield design aimed at reducing wind resistance during navigation.
At the naming ceremony, Mrs. Evelyn Ng, along with senior executives of PIL, representatives from Jiangnan Shipyard, and all employees involved in the construction of the new ship, witnessed this significant moment. The atmosphere at the ceremony was solemn yet lively, with everyone taking group photos to commemorate this historic occasion.
The name "Kota Embun" carries profound meaning. "Embun" means "dew" in Malay, symbolizing new life, nourishment, and harmony. It signifies the important role this new ship will play in promoting green and sustainable shipping. As one of the four sister ships in PIL's "E" series, "Kota Embun" is not only the largest vessel in the fleet but also among the first to use LNG as fuel, leading the green revolution in the shipping industry. Additionally, it is the first ship to feature a bow windshield designed to reduce wind resistance during navigation. This innovative design will further reduce fuel consumption and emissions, contributing to environmental protection.
It is reported that the ship is expected to be deployed on PIL's Far East to West Coast of South America 2 (WS2) route.
Mr. Lars Kastrup, CEO of PIL, explained that the naming of "Kota Embun" marks significant progress in the company's fleet renewal and green shipping initiatives. He stated, "Kota Embun is our fourth 'E'-class ship, and her addition will make our fleet greener and more modern. We understand that the shipping industry, as a vital part of the global economy, must take on the responsibility of driving green development. Therefore, we are committed to introducing advanced technologies to build more environmentally friendly and efficient vessels."
Mr. Kastrup also revealed that PIL currently has 14 additional new ships of varying capacities under construction. These new ships are also equipped with LNG dual-fuel technology and other advanced features, aiming to further enhance the fleet's green credentials and modernization. He emphasized, "The addition of each new ship will make our services more extensive, efficient, and environmentally friendly. We will continue to uphold our customer-first principle, providing high-quality transportation services for global trade."
Since 2022, PIL has achieved remarkable results in shipbuilding. In addition to the four 14,000 TEU ships, the company has ordered four 8,000 TEU, five 13,000 TEU, and five 9,000 TEU ships. The gradual delivery of these new vessels will significantly enhance PIL's capacity and service capabilities, solidifying its position in the global shipping market.
