As a global leader in maritime, road, air and logistics solutions, the CMA CGM Group has signed a letter of for the acquisition of a 20% stake in HHLA, operator of the Container Terminal Hamburg (CTH).


The transaction is expected to be completed in first half of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.


CTH currently handles some 4 million TEU per year and is considered one of the most terminals in Germany. A planned western extension project will add 38 hectares of yard area and 1,050 meters of new quay wall, increasing the’s capacity to around 6 million TEU and enabling it to serve the new generation of container ships.


CMA CGM already calls at CTH on its flagship East Asia – Northern Europe FAL service, which deploys LNG-powered ultra-large container vessels of 23,000 TEU.


The investment in line with the Group’s strategy to expand its portfolio of terminals worldwide and strengthen its presence in major European ports. The move will contribute to greater resilience, intermodal connections, low-carbon logistics levels across the entire European region, the Group said.


Rodolphe Saadé, CMA CGM Group’s Chairman and CEO, stated the collaboration will “contribute to increasing terminal capacity, strengthening rail connections and supporting its move towards more sustainable operations.”


The transaction will also support HHLA’s for long-term modernization of the port’s infrastructure. The terminal connects directly to the largest inland rail hub in Germany, Eurokombi, offering fast inland to Central and Eastern Europe.


The latest investment by the CMA CGM Group will underpin its long-term business in Germany. The Group first established an office in and Bremen in 1991 and today Germany is part of its regional cluster covering five countries, with 23 ships calling weekly in Hamburg, Bremerhaven Wilhelmshaven.
